The Great La Jolla Speed Runs

Corky Carroll

It is known that surfers do some crazy things.  This is both in the surf and when there is no surf.  There is a beach in La Jolla that has some of the best surf and best surfers in the world.  It is named Windansea.  Way back in the early 1960s there was a group of really crazy surf dudes that hung out there.  One day some dude came rolling down the street on what was called a “flexi-flyer” at the time.  It was kind of like a snow sled except it had wheels on it.  Everyone thought that was kind of cool and took turns trying to stand on it and do surf turns and stuff like that.

But then somebody happened to mention that there was a storm drain that ran all the way from the top of the hill in town and came out the drainpipe right there at Windansea.

Why not take the flexi-flyer up to the top of the hill and ride it under the streets of town all the way out the pipe and onto the beach at Windansea?

Well yeah, why not?  Now you and I can probably think of a zillion reasons why not.  But not these dudes.  It seemed like a right-on idea.  But it got better.  Instead of just one flexi-flyer, they went and bought about six of them and decided to make it a race.  Time trial style.  So they got walkie-talkies and positioned a starter at the top and a timer at the bottom.  Each guy took off one minute apart.  The fastest guy won something.  I have no idea what.

The amazing part is that nobody even stopped to consider that there might be debris in the storm drain or anything.  They just went and did it.  Also, what if the first guy crashed?  All the rest would run him down.  Hey, those were the chances they took.  Did I mention that surfers do crazy things?

Well, it worked.  The only problem that they encountered was the fact that they were going about mach 55 when they hit the pipe that came out onto the beach.  It was one of those round metal jobs that had the grooves in it. So when they hit that, it jarred all their fillings out and then launched them about 30 yards into the air and right directly into the shorebreak where the oncoming waves nailed them.  Everybody got hurt, but only a little.  The winner was the dude with the least amount of injuries.
