Immerse yourself in the wonders of the deep at Birch Aquarium at Scripps. For over a century, families have discovered the ocean world through exhibits and
educational programs at this unique aquarium-museum. Modest displays at the
turn of the century have evolved into magnificent habitats in the present. And
today, 400,000 people take an annual trip to Birch Aquarium at Scripps
Institution of Oceanography, UCSD in La Jolla, California.
History Makes a Splash The Marine Biological Association of San Diego was
established in 1903 to conduct near shore research in the Pacific Ocean. Its
name later changed to Scripps Institution of Oceanography to honor supporters
Ellen Browning and E.W. Scripps, part of the Scripps family of newspaper pioneers. They felt a deep commitment to
bringing scientific findings to the public, and used the institution to build
and maintain a public aquarium and museum to share the wonders of the ocean
world.
Modern Marvels Today, Birch Aquarium at Scripps provides a portal into the
world of sharks, seahorses and living coral reefs. Discover a stunning variety
of Pacific marine life in more than 60 habitats. The Hall of Fishes is an
enchanting Pacific journey, featuring the largest habitat: the 70,000-gallon Kelp Forest Tank. Scripps Explorers Gallery
features cutting-edge discoveries in climate, earth, and ocean sciences through
interactive exhibits. Preuss Tidepool Plaza, overlooking the Pacific Ocean,
