Want your family to
experience life at sea? It's as real today as it was in 1945, when the USS Midway was commissioned. Back then,
the Midway was just beginning her 47-year
career of service to America. Her odyssey carried young sailors from the end of
WWII to Operation Desert Storm – no carrier served longer in the 20th century
– all the while inspiring awe with a magical tradition of diligence,
vigilance and mission completion. And now you too can join in on the USS
Midway's final mission as home to an interactive museum, tribute and
education center.
Welcome to the City at
Sea The USS Midway once
supported 200 aviators and a crew of about 4,300 during an average tour of
duty. It literally was "the city at sea." Today, the USS Midway Museum invites
you to climb aboard and explore history through more than 60
exhibits that bring the magic of naval aviation to life.
Navigator for the Day Your maritime adventure on
the Midway features a self-guided audio tour – narrated by Midway
sailors – to 60 exhibits, from boiler to bridge, optional guided tours,
super-cool virtual reality Navy Jet Simulators, tasty treats at the Fantail Café,
and perfect souvenirs at the Jet Shop. Best of all, with the self-guided tour,
you navigate your own way throughout the Midway's awesome exhibits on the
second deck, hangar deck, flight deck, and up in the island (for you
landlubbers, that's the bridge and control tower - the museum's most popular
destination). At most stops you'll listen to Midway sailors tell stories of
what life was really like at sea.
Brand-New Exhibits There's a little something
for everyone aboard the Midway. Why not take the time to check out the
latest exhibits? If you're into raw, pulsing power, head to Engineering. Feel the
pressure of command in the Admiral's War Room. Stop by Sick Bay. Imagine
preparing 13,500 meals daily in the Galley. Or sit in Midway pilots' ready room
chairs where they were briefed on their missions.
Your Tour of Duty Time and time again, the
USS Midway went above and beyond the call of duty. It's truly magical
how the carrier and crew responded to every call - both military and humanitarian.
From boiler to bridge, the Midway continues to inspire appreciation for
courage and freedom. Isn't it time you become a part of that legacy?
