Vacation Health Tips

Eric Parizek

Going on vacation with the family is fun.  However, do you find yourself getting back from vacation and the scale is not the same as when you left?  Here are some tips to help maintain your body composition and weight.  Most important is your food consumption.  Try to eat only three meals and two snacks each day.  Eating smaller portions with more frequency is the way to keep your metabolism revving higher.  Your metabolism rate is directly linked to portion sizes, exercise, and hydration (water intake).

What is portion control?  Think of each meal (not snacks) being about the size of your fist.  Start with a good breakfast, the most important meal of the day because it sets the metabolism for the rest of day.  The worst thing to do is to skip this meal.  Examples on what to order: egg white omelet, a piece of fruit, a cup of coffee, and 12-16 oz. of water, or low-calorie cereal, a piece of fruit, low fat yogurt, cup of coffee, and 12-16 oz. of water.  Most restaurants are aware of catering to your dietary/healthy lifestyle.

When going to the park or an excursion with the family, bring a backpack with plenty of water and a couple of protein/granola bars in it.  Drink water throughout the day.  Around 10:30-11:00, eat half of a power bar/granola bar.  Lunch about 12:30-1:30: the “easy-fast-taste-good” food usually is not on the healthy side, so eat what you want, but only eat a portion the size of your fist.  Share an order and eat only half of what is served. At 4:30, eat the other half of the power bar/granola bar.

Ah…you're tired from a long day, and dinner is where you want to live it up.  Order what you want from the menu.  Have the wine that you want, but again, only eat a portion the size of your fist.

Have a wonderful holiday and go home the same weight as you left.
