What's Up in LA? Special Events Calendar - January 2010

11, September
January 8 – February 7. Odyssey Theatre. 2055 S. Sepulveda Blvd., Los Angeles.  What are the defining moments in our lives - those accidents of fate that change everything?  In 11, September – a provocative new drama about coincidence, truth, denial, and the secrets we keep – incredible circumstances bring two strangers together in a chance meeting that alters their lives forever.  310-477-2055 ext. 2. 11septemberplay.info.

Downtown on Ice
Through January 18. Pershing Square. 532 South Olive Street, Los Angeles.  Missing chilly traditions during your LA vacay?  Try outdoor ice skating smack dab in the middle of Downtown LA.  Honestly.  Each one-hour session is followed by 30 minutes of ice resurfacing.  Bonus: Take the Metro.  The Pershing Square stop is off the Red Line.  213-847-4970. laparks.org/pershingsquare/pershing/-doi.html.

Mary Poppins
Through February 7. Ahmanson Theatre. 135 N. Grand Avenue, Los Angeles.  Broadway’s supercalifragilistic, award-winning hit Mary Poppins is finally here.  Based on P.L. Travers’ cherished stories and the classic 1964 Walt Disney film, the production features the Academy Award®-winning music and lyrics by Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman.  Don’t miss this perfectly magical musical.  213-628-2772. centertheatregroup.org.
Wheelchair Accessible.

Rembrandt Prints
Through March 22 (Closed Mondays). Hammer Museum. 10899 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles.  Rembrandt van Rijn was a prolific printmaker and created about 300 etchings over the course of his long career.  This exhibition includes a variety of etchings with subjects ranging from religious narratives to figure studies and landscape.  What’s even more fascinating is that the exhibition also features different impressions of the same print, inviting you to closely compare the compositions and see how the artist experimented with each individual impression.  310-443-7000. hammer.ucla.edu.
Wheelchair Accessible.

Shark Lagoon Nights
Every Friday through April 9. 6 – 9pm. Aquarium of the Pacific. 100 Aquarium Way, Long Beach.  You’re invited to get up close with the ocean’s ultimate predators at the Aquarium of the Pacific for free during Shark Lagoon Nights.  This is your opportunity to touch bamboo sharks and see large sharks like sandtigers, and rays in the Aquarium’s Shark Lagoon.  Coffee, hot cocoa, beer, wine, desserts, and snacks are available for purchase.  562-590-3100. aquariumofpacific.org.
Wheelchair Accessible.

Tapes ‘n Tapes
January 24. Doors at 8pm. El Rey Theatre. 5515 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles.  Okay okay – so we know that some of the best indie rock bands hail outta Minneapolis, MN.  We’re not here to argue that; we know they’ve got the market cornered.  And Tapes ‘n Tapes is no exception to the rule.  But can we Los Angelenos at least claim fame to having a sweet venue to catch them at?  The El Rey is an original art deco theatre in the heart of Miracle Mile, one of LA’s preserved art deco districts.  If you can peel your eyes away from the band for a minute, check out that awesome chandelier dangling overhead.  Special guests: Wild Light and Wavves (two more super awesome bands, FYI).
