Feel the Power of Music: The GRAMMY Museum at LA Live

Anja Brydum

Are you inspired by all different kinds of music?  And intrigued by the creative process of music-making?  Would you jump at the chance to explore the art and technology of the recording process?  Longing to learn more about the history of the GRAMMY® Awards?  Well, we pretty much have your own personal paradise right here in downtown Los Angeles: The GRAMMY Museum at L.A. LIVE.

The GRAMMY Museum is a four-floored music-lovers haven, covering 30,000 square feet of more than two-dozen interactive, permanent and traveling exhibits.  The cutting edge experiences, films, and exhibits that await you offer up an exciting, multimedia, and interactive celebration of the power of music.  This one-of-a-kind visitor experience is engaging, educational, and most of all, inspirational.

Begin Your Journey
You pass through the first-floor lobby and take the elevator to the fourth floor.  What awaits you here could easily hold your attention for hours (honestly, you could barely peel us away).  The big, bright Crossroads table beckons, like a giant, interactive, multimedia touch screen, inviting you to explore nearly 200 genres of music.  Grab the ones that interest you and they open up to reveal photos, songs, and stories that describe the music and its impact.  But that’s not all.  Each genre then reveals connections to others, engaging you to experience familiar sounds in new ways, and new sounds in exciting ways.  Exploring the connections and cross connections could occupy the rest of your afternoon if you were so inclined (again: we know this from personal experience).

Explore More
Seriously, though, you’ll want to keep exploring.  The Museum also features more than 30 original and unique films from seven different filmmakers, including Emmy®-winning documentarian Jim Brown and GRAMMY Awards Executive Producer Ken Ehrlich.  You’ll also find 300+ unique and compelling artifacts.  From Elvis’ guitar to Pavarotti’s tuxedo, artifacts cover a breadth of musical genres unmatched in American museums.

The Sound Stage
Don’t miss checking out the 200-seat GRAMMY Sound Stage, home to a wide array of programs.  During the day, the theatre screens “The Making of a GRAMMY Moment”.  Shot backstage during the 50th Annual GRAMMY Celebration, this film lets guests experience firsthand the excitement of the GRAMMY Awards show.

What’s New?
Set to take the stage on January 8 is the Museum’s latest special exhibition: Elvis at 21: Photographs by Alfred Wertheimer.  In honor of what would have been his 75th birthday, this series of 56 striking images provide an intimate look at Elvis before he exploded onto the scene and became one of the most exciting performers of all time.

The GRAMMY Museum is located within L.A. LIVE (adjacent to STAPLES Center) at 800 W. Olympic Blvd., Los Angeles, CA.  It’s open seven days a week from 10am to 7:30pm.  Admission is $10 (free for members and children under 5).  For more information, visit grammymuseum.org or call 213-765-6800.
