As surfers, we absolutely love fall here in Southern California and especially along the beaches of Orange County. This is the time of year that we live for. Big swells from the south that are generated by either Southern Pacific storms or hurricanes off of Baja produce the biggest and best waves of the year in this area. Plus, the weather is ideal for surfing. It’s still warm in the water and on land and we have the potential for the hot Santa Ana winds that blow offshore and tweak the waves to world-class perfection. Firefighters don’t like these winds, but surfers love ‘em. The snot nosed brats are all back in school and most summer vacationers have all gone home so there are plenty of waves to go around for the dedicated core that feed on this stuff.
This is when the OC is at its best. From Huntington Beach (a.k.a. “Surf City”) on the north end to the San Onofre Surf Beach on the south, this stretch of coastline is one of the premier surfing zones on the planet. Almost all the spots are visible and open to the public. The piers in Huntington and San Clemente are great viewing areas as well as the bluffs above the famous Brooks Street reef in Laguna Beach. Today is a good time to take a beach day, jump in the cool Pacific and watch some excellent surfing.
